Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter born to Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. Her father, who was a carnival barker, died as a young child, forcing her mother to provide for the family by being waitress or cleaning lady. Ruth went to school in Boston's tenement region, which was the most deplorable. However, she left school only after two years of school to explore a career in acting.
