Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn located in Massachusetts. Her parents were Lithuanian Jews Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. When her father passed away as a Carnival barker as an infant She was required to provide for the family by working as a cook and server. Ruth was raised in the poorest neighborhood in Boston Massachusetts where she enrolled in high school. But she only stayed in school for two years before going on to pursue an acting career. The route she took wasn't without its challenges. While in New York, her first job involved posing stills for crime magazines. acting work she wanted eluded. After working as a hat-check woman in a nightclub she resigned and went back to Boston. There, she made ends meet as an usherette throughout the day, and in the evening, she performed in the New England Repertory Company, the first job she had that was steady. The study of drama helped her to receive a degree in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
