Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter of Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. When she was young, her carnival barker father died which left Ruth's mother with no choice but to work as a cleaning woman and waitress to feed the family. Ruth was raised in a tenement community that was poor of Boston, Massachusetts, where she went to school. She only attended the school for two years, before going on to pursue an acting profession. The path she chose to take turned out to be fraught with difficulties and In New York, she obtained the opportunity to pose as stills in a magazine for crime however, theatrical opportunities eluded her. Following a short stint as a club hat girl and a club hat girl, she made the decision to go home to the United States and quit her position. As an usherette, she worked during the day and then appeared at the New England Repertory Company by night, which was her first permanent acting gig. She earned a bachelor's certificate in drama at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
