Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. When she was a young girl, Roman's carnival-barker father died, which made her mother Mary Pauline (Gold), to become a waitress or cleaner in order for them to survive. Ruth attended school, and grew up in poverty within Boston Massachusetts in the tenement district. But she quit school only after two years in order to pursue an acting career. Her chosen path proved to be fraught with difficulties and In New York, she obtained the opportunity to pose as stills for a crime magazine however, theatrical opportunities eluded her. In New York, she volunteered at a bar as an entry-point girl, before quitting before moving to Boston. In the New England Repertory Company was her first gig as a steady actor. Earned money working during the day working as an Usherette. Her studies in drama led her to receive a degree in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
