Ruth Roman is the youngest child born to Lithuanian as well as Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) & Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. After her father died as a carnival barker, when Ruth was just a little girl and she was forced to keep the family going by working as a maid and server. Ruth attended school, and grew up in poverty within Boston Massachusetts in the tenement district. She left the school only after two years to pursue an acting career. The path was difficult to pursue. Although she got an opportunity at a theatre in New York posing as a woman for a magazine but no theater jobs came her way. Following a short time as a club hat girl and a club hat girl, she made the decision to go home to the United States and quit the job she was working in. In Boston, she worked to make ends meet as an usherette throughout the day, and working at night with the New England Repertory Company, the first job she had that was steady. She graduated with a degree in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
