Ruth Roman was born on June 22, 1939 on June 22, 1939 in Lynn Massachusetts. She is the eldest child of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold & Abraham Roman. Her father, who was a carnival barker, was killed at the age of a tiny little girl. This forced her mother to support the family by working as a waitress and cleaning woman. Ruth was raised in a poor neighborhood of Boston Massachusetts where she attended the school. However, she was only in school for a couple of years, then taking a break to pursue her acting career. Her path wasn't without its challenges. While in New York, her first job involved posing stills in crime magazines. the theatre work that she wanted eluded. While in New York, she was employed at a bar, as the check-in lady before resigning after a few months and moving to Boston. She made the ends meet by working as an usherette throughout the day, and at night performing in the New England Repertory Company, her first regular acting gig. She earned a bachelor's certificate in drama at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
