Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. When her father passed away as a carnival barker, at the age of a little girl, she had to help keep the family going by working as a cleaner and a server. Ruth grew in a poor Boston tenement community in Massachusetts. She attended school there. She quit school in just two short years to pursue acting. Her path was not without obstacles. When she was in New York, her first task was to pose stills for crime magazines. her dream of performing in the theater she longed for was not available. After that, she was a hat check girl at a night club before calling it quits and returning to Boston. She worked as an usherette during the early morning hours and also appeared at the New England Repertory Company by evening, her first permanent acting gig. She studied drama in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
