Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman is the third daughter of their family. When she was young the carnival barker father passed away, leaving Ruth's mother no option but to be a cleaning lady and waitress in order to feed the family. Ruth lived in the poor tenement district in Boston, Massachusetts, where she attended school. She only attended school for two years before leaving to pursue her acting career. Her journey was not without obstacles. her chosen career path. When she was in New York she was hired to take photos for a magazine about crime and drama, however no theater jobs were forthcoming. After working as a hat-check girl in a nightclub, she quit and returned to Boston. She was in Boston where she worked during the night as an actor with New England Repertory Company and for the remainder of her time as an usherette. She earned a bachelor's degree in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
