Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn at Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Lithuanian Jewish Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. Her father was a carnival barker, was killed at the age of a tiny little girl. This forced her mother to provide for the family by working as a waitress and cleaning woman. Ruth was a student at the school located in Boston's poorest tenement area. After only two school years she left for the acting career. The path she chose did not come without challenges. When she was in New York, her first job involved posing stills for crime magazines. acting work she longed to do was abyssal. Then, after a stint as a club hat girl, she decided to return home to the United States and quit the job she was working in. There she made a buck in the ushering industry during the during the day and then at night performing with the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first acting job. She completed her studies at Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she was a drama student.
