Ruth Roman was born on June 22, 1939 at Lynn Massachusetts. Ruth Roman is the eldest child of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold & Abraham Roman. She was only a young toddler when her father who was employed as an carnival barker, died. The mother of the family had to take on jobs like waitressing, cleaning and washing. Ruth was a student at the school located in Boston's poorest tenement area. However, she left school only after two years in order to explore a career in acting. The path was difficult to pursue. Although she got an interview as a hat check girl in New York posing as a writer for a mystery publication, no theatre jobs were offered to her. After that, she was an hat-checker at an evening club, before deciding to call the shots and moving back to Boston. It was the New England Repertory Company was the first position she held as an actor who was steady. She earned money by doing shifts during the day, working as an Usherette. She studied drama in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
