Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Her father was a carnival barker, died as a young child, forcing her mother to provide for the family by working as a waitress and cleaning woman. Ruth was born in a poor area of Boston Massachusetts where she attended the school. She quit school in just two years in order to study acting. It was not without difficulties. When she was offered a job as a model in New York as a model for a detective magazine she found it difficult to get jobs on stage. As a hat check woman in a nightclub she quit and returned to Boston. It was there that she made a buck working as an usherette during the during the day and then at night performed with the New England Repertory Company. It was her first acting job. In addition, she was a drama student and eventually graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
