Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. When she was young, her father was a carnival barker, leaving Ruth's mother without a choice other than to work as a cleaning girl and waitress to feed the family. Ruth was raised in a poor area of Boston Massachusetts where she attended high school. But she only stayed in school for two years before leaving to pursue her acting career. Her path to success turned out be fraught with difficulties such as In New York, she obtained the opportunity to pose as stills for a magazine about crime however, theatrical opportunities eluded her. Then in NYC, she worked at a bar, as an entry-point girl, before quitting before moving to Boston. It was there that she earned a living working as an usherette during the in the daytime, while at night she was a part of the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first job as an actor. She studied drama in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
