Ruth Roman was born on June 22, 1939 in Lynn Massachusetts. She was the first child born to Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold & Abraham Roman. After her father died as a carnival barker, at the age of a young girl, she had to help keep the family going by working as a maid and server. Ruth lived in the poor tenement district in Boston, Massachusetts, where she attended school. But she quit school only after two years to explore a career in acting. It was a difficult path to follow. Although she got an interview as a hat check girl in New York posing as a woman for a magazine however, there were no theatre opportunities that was offered. After working as a hat-check woman in a nightclub she resigned and went back to Boston. There, she made the ends meet by working as an usherette in the morning, while at night performing with the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. She also completed her studies at Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she was a drama student.
