Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. When she was a young girl, Roman's carnival-barker father passed away and caused her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold), to become an attendant or cleaner in order for them to be able to survive. Ruth lived in a tenement community that was poor in Boston, Massachusetts, where she went to school. But she only stayed in school for a couple of years, then taking a break to pursue her acting profession. It was a difficult path to pursue. While she was offered an interview at a theatre in New York posing as a woman for a magazine but no theater jobs was offered. Following a short time as a club hat girl and a club hat girl, she made the decision to go to her home in Massachusetts and leave her job. She was an usherette in the mornings and was a part of the New England Repertory Company by evening, her first ever permanent acting job. She took classes in drama in The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
