Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn in Massachusetts. Her parents were Lithuanian Jewish Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. As a child, Ruth Roman's father, a carnival barker, passed away in a tragic way, which caused her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold) to be a waitress or cleaner in order for them to remain alive. Ruth attended the school in Boston's poorest tenement area. The school she attended after only two years in pursuit of the profession of acting. She faced many obstacles on her chosen career path. Then, in New York she was hired to take photos in a crime magazine however, no theatre job opportunities came up. She then worked as a hat check girl at an evening club, before deciding to call it quits and returning to Boston. There she earned a living in the ushering industry during the in the daytime, while at night she was a part of the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first acting job. In addition, she was a drama student and later graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
